Do Not Follow the Guidebook: Make Your Own Vacation | XL Travel Blog

You see them all over the bookstore: guidebooks that instruct you on what to do on your vacation, when to do it, and how. They are written by authors ranging from college students to seasoned career travelers. But all of the authors have something in common; they are not you. It is easy to get caught up in guidebooks when planning a vacation. Too often, travelers build up an image of a vacation in their heads and are disappointed when it does not match reality. This kind of thinking can ruin a vacation for no reason! Here are ways to ditch the guidebooks and experience your trip on your own terms.

1.Talk to Locals

Tourists often go through the worn gauntlet of vacation activities. They sit on a tour bus and wait in line at museums, and at the end of the trip they say they did not enjoy the city. Of course they did not; they were never exposed to the city. Rather than read about what another tourist enjoys, ask someone who lives there. You will get a more immersive experience.

 2. Do What You Do at Home

Do you enjoy going to museums when you are at home? No? Then why would you go to one while on vacation? Being stuck in museums and other tourist traps can make a trip painfully ordinary. Instead, look for things you would do if you were home. Find a bar. Go to a comedy show. Play pickup basketball. Be yourself.

 3. Read Local Publications

Instead of a guidebook, pick up local event listings or a newspaper. They will give you more current ideas for vacation activities that will likely not be saturated with other tourists. If you do not know the language, ask someone to translate for you. It is an excuse to talk to a local!

Remember, guidebooks are written in a one-size-fits-all manner. You deserve better. Make your vacation your own, and save money on the guidebook.
