Easy Travel Foods for Your Next Hiking Trip

Spring is here, and many people are beginning to plan upcoming hiking trips to take advantage of the warm weather. When preparing for your hikes, it is important to consider what kind of physical exertion you should expect and plan your food accordingly. A lot of people underestimate their nutritional needs on these outings, which can lead to trouble midway through a trek. If you are gearing up for a hike, read on for a few easy travel foods that you may want to pack.

Hiking trips are one of the rare occasions in which eating a bag of potato chips can be good for you. Many people think that they should always stay away from salt, but sodium has in fact been shown to support physical endurance and fluid balance. Inadequate salt levels can also lead to muscle cramps, which can be very difficult to deal with if you are halfway up a mountain hiking trail.

Nuts and dried fruits are fantastically easy travel foods. They are compact, light and calorically dense, so packing just one Ziploc bag will probably suffice for most day trips. Popular premade mixtures include almonds, cranberries, cashews and apricots, but you can easily purchase fruits and nuts individually and mix-and-match to your preference. If you have a sweet tooth, feel free to throw in a handful of chocolate bits.

As with any physical exercise, it is also very important to bring lots of water. This may be heavy and cumbersome to carry, but it is an absolute must. Becoming dehydrated far from help may be one of the most dangerous situations hikers place themselves in, so be sure to guard against that possibility by ensuring you and everyone in your group has more than enough water.

The next time you hit a hiking trail, consider taking some easy travel foods to keep you going throughout the trek. That way you can focus on the gorgeous scenery and sunny weather rather than hunger or a muscular cramp.
