How to Save Money While Traveling

Posted on 02. Oct, 2014 by in Uncategorized, Vacations

Whether you are traveling for pleasure or business, it can be very expensive. Here are three cost–cutting strategies you can try to help stick to your budget and keep more money in your pocket.

Hotels can be one of the most expensive places to stay while traveling. Many people don’t realize that there are many other alternatives including house or apartment rentals. Particularly if you have a big group of people, renting a house may result in substantial cost savings. Having your own kitchen and being able to cook meals when you’d like means less money spent dining out. There are often many hidden fees in hotel bills including room, city, and tourism taxes. You may even be charged for newspaper delivery, even if you do not want one. You may not be aware of these extra charges until you get your bill.

Taking trips during the off-season is a great way to reduce your travel costs. Some destinations have the highest hotel and airplane rates of the year during holidays. If you go a week or two before or after, you will probably pay substantially less. Hotel rooms in cities such as Las Vegas are usually the most expensive on the weekends so if you can plan your trip during the week prices are typically lower.

Recently, more and more airlines are charging extra fees for what used to be basic services. There is frequently a $25-$35 fee for each bag you check, which can really add up when you are flying with the whole family. Be sure to factor bag check fees into the cost of airplane tickets when you choose an airline that does not allow bags to fly free. Many airlines also charge for meals on the plane.  Also, food purchased at airports is often more expensive than what you would pay at a regular restaurant or store. Taking the time to pack your own snacks before hand is a tip that can save money.

Following these three tips can help ensure your trip is less expensive, while still being enjoyable and productive.
