Top Three U.S. Cities to Visit | XL Travel Blog

Considering a vacation, but unsure where to go? Recent TripAdvisor hotel bookings indicate that the following three U.S. cities are top destinations for travel:

  1. New York
  2. Chicago
  3. San Francisco

What to See, What to Do

New York – A forever favorite, it would be hard to imagine any list of top destination cities without New York City listed near the top. Home to so many well-known architectural landmarks such as the new One World Observatory (and memorial), the Empire State Building, the elegant, art deco Chrysler building and Times Square.

In addition to its famous theater district, museums and Central Park, New York is also a foodie’s paradise teeming with famous celebrity restaurants and even great ethnic street food. For travelers on a budget, New York has a surprising amount of free tours and activities. Be sure to look up Big Apple Greeters, a group of 300 New York volunteers who offer tours of many of New York’s neighborhoods. The tours are offered in over 22 languages.

Chicago – Otherwise known as the Windy City, Chicago is another perennial favorite with tourists. Situated on Lake Michigan, it, too, is also home to many architectural gems including the John Hancock Center, Willis Tower, and the Tribune Tower.

In addition to the theaters and standard sightseeing tours, don’t overlook the Art Institute of Chicago, Cloud Gate, the Museum of Science, Wrigley Field, or the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

San Francisco – Situated at the tip of a peninsula and surrounded by the bay and ocean, San Francisco has an enviable climate year round. Its skyline is quite recognizable for its iconic Golden Gate Bridge and the famous pyramid-shaped Transamerica building.

According to Frommer’s, the top 10 tourist attractions in San Francisco are: the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, the famous cable cars, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Haight-Ashbury, Chinatown, and AT&T Park, home of the Giants.

Whichever city you choose as your destination will clearly be a winner and should leave you with enough memories to last a lifetime.
